Every THCA brand advertises a percentage. Almost none of them tell you what that percentage costs.
A flower testing at 24.138% THCA priced at $5.57 per gram is a far worse purchase than one testing at 32.865% priced at $1.10 per gram. Both are real products sold online right now. This market sells on potency numbers and stays quiet about price efficiency, which leaves most buyers optimizing the wrong variable.
We pulled live pricing from four online retailers in August 2026, obtained lab reports where they exist, and ranked everything by a single figure: what one gram of activated THC actually costs. The cheapest option runs $3.80. The most expensive runs $28.27. Same category, same federal framework, more than seven times the price for the same active compound.
The Math
THCA does not get you high. It is the acidic precursor to delta-9 THC and stays inert until heat drives decarboxylation, a reaction that breaks a carboxyl group off the molecule and releases it as carbon dioxide.
That carboxyl group has mass, so the conversion loses weight. THCA has a molecular weight near 358.5 g/mol. Delta-9 THC comes in near 314.5 g/mol. Divide the second by the first and you get 0.877, the conversion factor every accredited cannabis lab applies.
Total THC = (THCA x 0.877) + delta-9 THC
Every certificate cited below prints that formula on the report itself. A flower testing at 32.865% THCA delivers 29.04% total THC.
Divide price per gram by total THC as a decimal and you get cost per gram of activated THC. Every retailer publishes the inputs. None publish the output.
Combustion never reaches the theoretical ceiling in practice. Bowl temperature, burn rate, sidestream smoke, and moisture all reduce what reaches you. These figures compare products against each other rather than predict a dose.
Both corrections change the tables significantly. Guava drops from second place to near the bottom.
Buying by the Pound
| Brand | SKU | Format | Price ($) | $/g | Total THC | $/g THC | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh Bros | Gelato 41 smalls | 1 lb | $500 | $1.10 | 29.04% | $3.80 | COA |
| Fresh Bros | Gelato 41 regular | 1 lb | $749 | $1.65 | 29.04% | $5.69 | COA |
| Fresh Bros | Biscotti | 1 lb | $749 | $1.65 | 24.32% | $6.79 | COA |
| Fresh Bros | Obama Runtz | 1 lb | $799 | $1.76 | 24.08% | $7.31 | COA |
| Fresh Bros | Permanent Marker | 1 lb | $749 | $1.65 | 21.90% | $7.54 | COA |
| Green Unicorn | Blue Zushi | 1 lb | $700 | $1.54 | 20.45% claimed | $7.55 | No COA |
| Black Tie | Guava Light Dep | 1/4 lb | $599.99 | $5.00–5.29 | 28.52% | $17.53–18.56 | COA |
| Lucky Elk | Jelly Breath bulk | 1/4 lb | $655 | $5.85 | Not disclosed | Not calculable | Delta-9 only |
Rows without a linked certificate are positioned using the retailer’s own stated potency. Black Tie sells 30-gram ounces, so their quarter pound may be 113.4g or 120g, which is why that figure carries a range.
Buying by the Ounce
| Brand | SKU | Price | $/g | Total THC | $/g THC | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh Bros | Gelato 41 | $69 | $2.46 | 29.04% | $8.49 | COA |
| Green Unicorn | Ounce Deal Bags | $69.99 | $2.50 | ~28.3% claimed | ~$8.83 | no COA |
| Fresh Bros | Biscotti | $69 | $2.46 | 24.32% | $10.14 | COA |
| Green Unicorn | Blue Zushi | $99.00 | $3.54 | 20.45% claimed | $17.29 | no COA |
| Lucky Elk | Grape Hi-Chew sungrown | $156 | $5.57 | 21.17% | $26.32 | COA |
| Lucky Elk | Lemon Cherry Gelato greenhouse | $196 | $7.00 | 24.76% | $28.27 | COA |
Buying an ounce costs roughly twice as much per gram of activated THC as buying a pound of the same flower. That gap is the largest single lever available to anyone shopping this category.
Lab Reports Behind This Guide
Six products here carry certificates we obtained and checked line by line.
| Product | THCA | Delta-9 | Total THC | Lab | Report date | Report |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Jealousy Indoor | 23.66% | 0.0828% | 20.83% | Delta 9 Analytical | Sep 22, 2025 | COA |
The Badger Labs reports come from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, run by HPLC-VWD under method TP-POT-05, signed by lab director Justin Hall, issued under PJLA accreditation 115522 to the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard. The Jealousy report comes from Delta 9 Analytical in Raleigh, North Carolina, accreditation 120090, run by LCMS.
Every one of these is a cannabinoid potency panel. They confirm THCA, delta-9, and total cannabinoids. None cover heavy metals, pesticides, microbials, mycotoxins, or residual solvents, and none report terpenes. Ask any retailer for the full safety panel before buying at pound scale.
Report dates matter as much as the numbers. The Gelato 41 certificate is dated May 2025, and that product sits in a clearance tier where the seller states outright that quality varies between batches, so the flower shipping today came off a later harvest. Request the lot report matching your order. The Guava report is dated April 2026 and is the freshest document in this comparison.
Lab reports link to the issuing retailer’s own file where one is published. The two Lucky Elk potency reports are archived copies, since Lucky Elk does not publish certificates at public URLs.
What Each Brand Actually Publishes
Green Unicorn Farms prints tested percentages on the product page, 33.05% on Blue Zushi and 29.79% on their Lemon Cherry Gelato, with no certificate behind either. The numbers may well be accurate. A reader cannot confirm them.
Lucky Elk publishes tier descriptions rather than percentages on most product pages. Their bulk Jelly Breath listing shows delta-9 under 0.3% and no THCA figure at all, which confirms the product is legal while telling a buyer nothing about what they are getting for $5.85 per gram.
Black Tie links a certificate directly on each product page before purchase and sells 30 grams to the ounce instead of 28, worth 7% on any per-gram comparison. They do not ship to California, Idaho, or Texas, and much of their flower catalog currently shows out of stock.
Fresh Bros maintains a central archive with certificates for four strains linked throughout this guide, the deepest set of verified documentation in this comparison.
Four Ways Real Cost Gets Obscured
Ounce definitions vary between sellers. Most sell 28 grams, Black Tie sells 30, and that is a 7% swing before comparing a single price. Convert everything to per-gram first.
Tier badges replace tested numbers. “Top-Shelf,” “AAAA Exotic,” and “High” describe nothing measurable, and two products in the tables above cannot be scored properly for that reason.
Larger formats are not automatically cheaper per gram. Check the figure at every weight rather than assuming the bigger bag wins. The Lucky Elk quarter-pound listing prices higher per gram than several competitors’ ounces.
Smalls get framed as a downgrade. They carry a cosmetic discount rather than a potency discount, which makes them the most efficient tier on almost any menu. Sellers who break them out separately, like this small buds collection or Black Tie’s minis, make the efficient purchase easy to find.
Reading a Certificate
Match the batch ID on the certificate to the lot printed on your package. A brand-wide archive with no batch linkage confirms a company tests something, not that it tested what you received.
Check that delta-9 appears on a dry weight basis. Compliance requires 0.3% or below by dry weight, and moisture content shifts the figure.
Recalculate total THC yourself. Multiply THCA by 0.877, add delta-9, compare against the lab’s stated total. All six certificates above reconcile to within rounding.
Read the panel scope and the date. Cannabinoid potency is the cheapest test to run, which is why the safety panels go missing first. Confirm the lab holds ISO 17025 accreditation.
Legal Status and Cautions
The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp by delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis rather than by total THC potential, which is what makes this category federally legal. Several states have since written total-THC standards into law or restricted smokable hemp outright. Check your state before ordering, and note that shipping restrictions differ by retailer.
Drug testing rules this category out for anyone subject to it. THCA converts to delta-9 THC when you smoke it, and standard immunoassay panels detect THC metabolites without distinguishing the source.
Storage protects what you paid for. THCA degrades toward delta-9 slowly at room temperature and faster with heat and light exposure, so a badly stored pound loses the value that made it worth buying. Airtight container, blocked from UV, cool and dark, humidity packs between 58% and 62%.

Common Questions
What counts as a good price per gram in 2026?
Under $2.50 per gram at ounce scale with a published tested potency is competitive. Under $1.75 at pound scale is strong, and under $1.25 is unusual. Past $5 per gram you are paying for bud size, sourcing story, or brand rather than cannabinoid content.
Are smalls worth buying?
For most buyers, yes. Same plants, same trichome density, smaller bud sites, roughly a third off per gram. You give up how it photographs.
Why does bulk cost so much less?
Sourcing. Companies that pre-book volume from farms before harvest carry different costs than companies buying finished flower on the spot market, and some of that difference reaches the customer.
Does cheaper mean worse?
Not by itself, but verify instead of assuming. Pull the certificate, buy the smallest format first, confirm what arrived, then scale up.
Should I just buy the highest advertised THCA?
No. Permanent Marker and Gelato 41 sell at the same price on the same menu, and the certificates show 21.897% against 29.040% total THC. The label percentage would not have told you that. The lab report did.
